Swiss Open:Day 4-South Korea guaranteed the WD title and runner-up spot

2013-03-17

South Korean players performed very well in the semi-finals of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2013. In the men’s doubles, Ko Sung Hyun/ Lee Yong Dae beat England’s ADCOCK/ELLIS 21-19,21-19 in a close game. Two South Korean pairs also reached the final in the women’s doubles: Lee So Hee/ Shin Seung Chan beat Malaysian opposition in straight games; shortly after, Jung Kyung Eun/ Kim Ha Neul beat JUHL/PEDERSEN of Denmark by the same margin, the results meaning that South Korea is guaranteed to take the title and runner-up spot in the women’s doubles at the Swiss Open.

Ko/ Lee were up against England’s in-form pair ADCOCK/ ELLIS. The two sides engaged in some fierce exchanges in mid-court. Ko/ Lee maintained a narrow lead and were unable to shake off their tenacious opponents, both games ending 21-19. The final will see Chai Biao/ Hong Wei of China face South Korea’s Ko/ Lee. Facing these two tall Chinese players, Ko/ Lee will have to be more aggressive otherwise they will find it difficult to defend against their opponents’ powerful leaping attacks.

In the women’s doubles semis, young Lee So Hee/ Shin Seung Chan were up against Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/ Woon Khe Wei ;they came through 21-17,21-19 to book their ticket to the final. Then, Jung Kyung Eun/ Kim Ha Na faced top seeds JUHL/ PEDERSEN. The Danes have beat the Korean pair on previous meetings but, this time, Kim/ Jung raced into an early 11-5 first game lead; the pair defended outstandingly and Kim attacked aggressively from the back of the court, adding diversity to their attack modes. The South Korea pair won 21-19,21-17 and will face their older compatriots in the final.

The men’s singles final will see Du Peng Yu, the top seed who beat Hong Kong’s Hu Yu in the semis, against his teammate Wang Zheng Ming who came back from behind to defeat Jan O JORGENSEN last night.

In the women’s doubles, Wang Shi Xian, winner of the Swiss Open 2010, beat India’s Saina Nehwal 21-11,10-21,21-9, once again gaining the chance to take the title. She will face Thailand’s young Inthanon Ratchanok in the final.
