After winning a silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in April, Hong Kong’s Lee Reginald Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah follow up with a string of impressive performances this week in Sydney, where they knocked out four seeded teams en route to clinching their first Superseries title at the Australian Open, asserting themselves into the top league.
The World No.13 mixed doubles duo took revenge on another pair of VICTOR players and World Champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, to whom they lost in the Asia’s biggest annual continental event, in the semifinals on Saturday, which marked their first career win over the Indonesians in four meetings. The breakthrough win looks to propel them back inside the top 10 when the new rankings are released on Thursday.
Lee and Chau have climbed up to as high as No.6 in 2014 and are taken as one of Hong Kong’s best hopes for the podium at the Olympic Games, which no player from their country has achieved. Their previous best result in a Superseries tournament was a semifinal in 2014 at the Japan Open.
In the men’s doubles, Team VICTOR Korean stars Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong did not drop a game all week and captured their second straight Australian Open victory and also the second title of the year.
There are four other players from Korea making the semis this week in Sydney including 2014 mixed doubles champions Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na, and Bae Yeon Ju and Sung Ji Hyun in women’s singles, who both have reached world’s top-5.
Yoo Yeon Seong overcame his leg injury to retain the Australian Open crown.
